A movie chat with IBM i
Today, recommender systems are widely used in various industries such as video streaming services, online shopping, and content creation and sharing. Thanks to the development of deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI), recommender systems can use the large amount of data that is generated by users' everyday selections and make high-quality recommendations. If your company has user purchase history and ratings data, and you hope to use that data to recommend new products to users so that the user is more likely to buy the products you recommend, then this workshop can help you to build and deploy a working system on your IBM i. The workshop will guide you step-by-step  to build a movie recommender system with a simple virtual assistant chatbot user interface: train, deploy, and integrate a model using python on IBM i, your IBM i Db2 database, IBM Watson Assistant, and Node-RED.

Does Apache Camel like IBM i?
This insightful session explores the compatibility and integration of Apache Camel, an established open-source framework, with IBMi systems. Apache Camel, known for simplifying the interconnection of various applications and systems, has a substantial track record since its inception in 2007, evidenced by its extensive community support and numerous releases. The core discussion revolves around Camel's architecture, particularly CamelContext, which is the heart of the framework, orchestrating routes, endpoints, and processors. We will briefly overview Camel's core and non-core components and their roles in facilitating efficient system integrations. The session also touches upon Camel Processors, showcasing their utility in data transformation and enrichment with concise examples. A significant focus is on the fusion of Apache Camel with Spring Boot, highlighting how this combination streamlines the creation of self-contained applications and simplifies configuration across various environments. The JT400 component's role in this integration is crucial, especially for program calls and data queue operations within IBMi. Additionally, the session will cover the SQL Component in Camel, discussing its configuration and application in executing SQL queries. The capabilities of the HTTP and REST components will also be explored, demonstrating their effectiveness in handling web requests and responses. Lastly, the session applies these concepts to a real-world scenario: leveraging Apache Camel for smart home automation, particularly in managing IoT devices through IBMi systems. This example aims to illustrate the practical and modern applications of Apache Camel in diverse technological environments. The session concludes with a lighthearted segment, humorously affirming the compatibility of Apache Camel with IBMi, symbolizing the successful and dynamic integration of these two technologies in today's digital landscape.

Build a Phenomenal Web App on IBM i in Under 10 Minutes — No Coding Required!
The Valence Framework for IBM i, available for free download, includes a browser-based low-code development utility called Nitro App Builder (NAB), through which anyone with a solid understanding of their IBM i database can create dazzling web or mobile apps, including dashboards and data grids with download-to-Excel functionality, all in a matter of minutes! Running entirely on IBM i, the NAB tool can also be used to create intricate file maintenance apps, through which users can adjust content in one or more physical files — you control which fields they can see and/or edit.

All of this can be achieved with no coding, though IBM i developers can easily extend the app's functionality with RPG or SQL code to handle business logic as needed. Advanced programmers comfortable with HTML5 and JavaScript code can take things even further, creating super elaborate data-entry apps that work hand-in-hand with server-side RPG logic through the Valence Portal.

The bottom line:  With Valence, whether you're a seasoned RPG developer or a super user with intimate knowledge of your system's physical files, you can crank out highly functional web and mobile apps on IBM i in no time — no prior experience in web or mobile development required. Come to this quick demo session to see the latest release of the Valence framework, and how easy it is to quickly build and deploy such an app on your system.

Protect your Power-IT Infrastructure against cyberattacks!
As security is getting more and more important and IBM i systems need to be integrated in a corporate wide security solution just as any other platform, we would like to show what needs to be considered to achieve that goal and which challenges will probably come up on the way to protect the basic infrastructure against cyber attacks. Within the presentation we will cover topics like MFA for the basic infrastructure as well as IBM i, QRADAR as SIEM solution to monitor relevant events, as well as the IBM Storage Solution “Safe Guarded Copy” to speed up the recovery process in worst case scenarios.
In relation to security, it is also relevant for companies to cover the topic of privileged access management (PAM) in a secure and auditable manner. To address this topic, we will also present how to have a corporate wide PAM solution including IBM i.

IBM/Db2 Services used in (RPG) Programs ... can make live much easier!
With the last releases and technology refreshes IBM provided a lot of new SQL Services. A lot of these Services provide functionalities that are not directly available in RPG or can only be implemented in RPG by calling complex System APIs and by using pointer handling for accessing the data. However, now we have SQL services that can write data into the IFS or can delete old spool files or even better can convert a spool file into a PDF-Document. Since the last Technology Refresh it is also possible to send eMails or to generate *.csv files directly with SQL and IBM Services. This session will demonstrate how RPG Programs can be simplified by just using embedded SQL and IBM Services.

Preventing malicious or tampered code from execution in AIX
Traditionally, many companies test their application and system changes thorouhgly before deploying them to an AIX production environment. This is a good practice.
It is also a common practice to grant root access to many system and application
administrators to the production systems. This introduces a huge risk of unauthorized
change in program code and scripts. Many times file permission are changed to
debug a problem and then left on the system in a wide open fashion granting all users
full access to critical files. AIX provides a feature called Trusted Execution (TE)
that can be used in different modes to check the integrity of files along with all
security relevant attributes of a file.
This session will show you how TE can be used to check in offline and online mode the integrity of AIX OS code but also how to add your own files into the TE compliance checking environment. The session also provides an excursion into the PowerSC integration of Trusted Execution.

PowerSC - Security and Compliance with Power
The PowerSC (Security and Compliance) product helps ensuring the security of IT environments at the OS level. Compliance needs are increasing with the digitalization of the industries, new standards and standards asking for increasing security to manage data (who can access it, how can users access it...). PowerSC allows to centrally manage security and compliance on all endpoints (IBM i, AIX, Linux on Power & x86). In this way, you can get better support for compliance audits. PowerSC also belongs to the Zero Trust strategy, and can be implemented alongside the first steps of the strategy.

Realistic Performance comparison between Power9 - Power10
As Power10 servers are now in production since quite some time, we have done a couple of comparisons between Power9 and Power10.
To give a good overview we have compared two different installations:
1) The first one is an Enterprise Power Customer with IBM i and SAP
2) The second one is also using an Enterprise Power Server, but AIX as operating system with Oracle and SAP
In both cases “only” the Power Enterprise Server was changed, the External Storage system was not upgraded at the same time. Because of that all performance improvements were only gained through the change of the server.

In addition, we will cover the difference regarding the CPU utilization that is measured by the Operation System, compared to the hypervisor, in an upgrade scenario from Power9 to Power10. As soon as more then one partition is running on a Power Server, it is important to keep both values under control.

Securing IBM i Access Client Solutions and IBM Navigator for i
The main tools from IBM to manage your IBM i environment are Access Client Solutions (ACS) and the IBM Navigator for i. These are powerful interfaces that let you not only configure your system, but also interact with your IBM i database. Nowadays, it is a good practice to implement a Principle of Least Privilege (PoLP). According to this principle, users should only get as much access and authority that is required in their job role.
In this session you will learn what mechanisms you can use on the client and server side
to restrict access to ACS and Navigator for i functions. You will also get to know
the DOs and DON'Ts to prevent unintenional backdoors into your system.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn the different client and server side options to restrict access for ACS and Navigator for i
- Get to know the configuration specifics and best practices to secure the environment

Geospatial on IBM i - “Why Where Matters”
The big “new thing” on IBM i DB is using spatial data. Cartography is as old as civilization itself. From crossing oceans to planning cities, information was collected and transcribed onto paper. Just as we digitized text and numbers, cartographers started putting point, line, and polygon data into digital systems. DB2 for i now has spatial object support.  The geospatial support is not only for use by spatial analysts. These special types of vector data and databases are somewhat esoteric for application developers. We will show you what you can already achieve today and the huge potential for your business by making your database more location-aware. Using geospatial technologies to gather location information provides us with data that can give a deeper understanding of a whole host of issues. This spatial data can answer questions, help with predictions, analysis and decision making. But also faster picking routes, easier layout management, ...

Preventing Ransomware attacks on IBM i
Back in 2017 the Wanna Cry ransomware attack affected thousands of companies around the globe. In the meantime several new ransomware attack versions have been introduced and ransomware attacks are even offered as a service called Ransomware as a Service (RaaS).
Even though there are currently no known ransomware viruses that are running natively
on IBM i, many IBM i systems have been affected by ransomware via external access resulting in system outages up to two weeks and thousands of encrypted objects.
This session gives an introduction to ransomware and what you can configure in IBM i
to lower the risk of successful ransomware attacks. Just remember, being hit by a ransomware attack is not a matter of "if", it is a matter of "when" it is going to happen.
Learning Objectives:
- Learn what Ransomware attacks are and how they work
- Know the entrypoints into your system for Ransomware attacks
- Get to know configuration best practices to lower the risk for Ransomware attacks

Fun with JSON Publishing: Letting SQL Do the Dirty Work
If you've ever been tasked as a developer with creating complex responses for an internal or external web service, you've likely explored multiple avenues for generating JSON from your IBM i programs. From constructing responses manually in your RPG code, to using various publicly available toolkits like YAJL, RPG NextGen, etc., there are a myriad of ways to create JSON strings with all the requisite curlies, commas, colons, quotes and hard brackets. If you're on IBM i OS 7.2 or higher, there's yet another avenue you can explore in which you let SQL do the JSON construction work for you. The biggest benefit of this approach becomes most apparent when your JSON response requires arrays, and especially nested subarrays. Coding such responses can be a bit tedious when done on a record-by-record basis in your program, whereas by using some nifty functions you can can let SQL assemble your JSON response automatically. In this session we'll review the basics of JSON publishing functions such as JSON_Object, JSON_Array, JSON_ObjectAgg and JSON_ArrayAgg. We'll explore some practical use examples for publishing your business data in JSON, letting SQL do all the dirty work. Learning Objectives: 1. Learn the syntax of the most commonly used SQL JSON publishing functions 2. Understand the differences between a standard SQL select statement and an SQL statement constructing a JSON response 3. See how to integrate these SQL functions into an RPG program

SQL Performance Analysis Tools in Access Client Solutions (ACS)
SQL becomes more and more the standard for accessing data in physical files or SQL tables. Contrary to native I/O where the programmer specifies a physical or logical file that is to be used, in SQL it is the Optimizer who decides whether an index is used or whether the complete table/file is read.
Long running queries are a nuisance. ACS (Access Client Solutions) provide multiple interfaces for recording information about SQL queries and for analyzing the collected data, such as Visual Explain, SQL Plan Cache (Snapshots) or SQL Performance Monitors. All advised indices from both query engines (SQE and CQE) are recorded along with information about how often and when an index was used for the last time. With Access Client Solution this information can be accessed and necessary indexes immediately created.
